The event unfolded on Thursday, May 31, when Janaya Bennett of Bridgeport arrived at a store in the Trumbull Mall where her boyfriend was opening for the day, said Trumbull Police Lt. Keith Golding.
The ex-boyfriend told Bennett to leave the store, but instead, she threatened to kill him, Golding said.
He told Bennett to leave again and that’s when she took a steak knife from her purse and attempted to stab him. The victim was able to grab the knife away from her, but Bennett grabbed a pair of scissors from a nearby counter and lunged at him again, Golding said.
A second struggle ensued with Bennett attempting to choke the victim as they were fighting over the scissors. The ex-boyfriend eventually wrestled the scissors away and Bennett fled the store, he added.
While the Trumbull Police were on scene, Bennett returned to the store and was taken into custody. During her arrest, she admitted to police her intentions of attacking the ex-boyfriend.
Bennett was charged with violation of a protective order, criminal attempt to assault, threatening and breach of peace.
She is being held on $100,000 bond.
